The population of India's slums is expected to rise close to 100 million in 2011.
According to a new report by the Indian government's Planning Commission, the slum population is expected to increase from 75.26 million people in 2001 to 93.06 million next year.
"Indian Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja, points out that the trend was inevitable because of increased urbanization. However, Selja also believes that the percentage of slums will begin to decrease as a result of more government programs to reduce slum development."
