Mayor John Street's anti-blight proposal has some members of the city council concerned about a lack of oversight.
"Street wants to demolish 14,000 homes, raze hundreds of commercial buildings, and shore up another 2,500 houses as well as create funds for home repairs and a land bank. He also plans to redirect $1.6 billion in government funding and reorganize a handful of city development and housing agencies. Street needs Council's approval to sell $250 million in bonds to raise funds for the project. Council veterans know that once they sign off on the money, they are out of the picture - unable to direct resources in their districts unless by the magnanimity of the Street administration, which has not been inclined to share power."
