Housing created for the Olympic Village in Vancouver was intended to be reused after the 2010 event as affordable housing. But the province hasn't been able to find an operator. Now the city wants to move ahead without the province's help.
Mayor Gregor Robertson wants to have people move into the housing by Winter, and has announced that the city will try to find its own operator for the housing.
"Robertson's remarks came two days after B.C. Housing Minister Rich Coleman rejected the only three bids filed by non-profit agencies to operate 252 units - half of which are non-market housing.
'It's disappointing and frustrating to run into this roadblock,' said Robertson, noting that the city and the province have cooperated successfully on a number of social housing projects in recent years. 'No one can recall running into this before.'"
