Telluride, CO just became the latest U.S. city to ban the distribution of plastic shopping bags, following on the heels of communities in California, North Carolina, Alaska, Connecticut, and Washington.
The Telluride Town Council voted 5-2 last week to prohibit grocers and other stores from distributing most plastic shopping bags to consumers, which will go into effect in March of 2011. The move made Telluride the first town in Colorado to ban plastic bags.
"We hope it allows people that live within the region, and people that visit the region, to realize the importance of taking every step possible in order to lower your carbon footprint," said Mayor Stu Fraser.
California voters turned down a statewide ban in August, but numerous California cities and other communities around the country have passed their own local bans. Other communities, like Washington, D.C., have passed laws adding a tax for plastic bag use instead.
