Rio de Janeiro is building a 3.4 km urban gondola in the Complexo do Alemao favelas. The system is on track to be operational by the end of the year.
The gondola system (also known as cable-propelled transit) will have six stations, which is more than any urban gondola project yet built. Gondolas are growing in popularity down south- the Rio system will be the third in a major South American city.
There is little information on the project that isn't in Portguese, but gondolaproject.com has some pictures and info. The editors surmise that Rio is motivated by other factors than just creating new transit:
"That Rio is the host of the upcoming summer Olympics and Brazil the host of the upcoming World Cup, this system is certain to get more attention and notice in the near future."
