Philly's Newest Bridge is Ped-and-Bike Friendly

Inquirer architecture critic Inga Saffron gives a thumbs up to the design of Philadelphia's new South Street Bridge, which includes a bike lane that connects to bike paths on each side.

Saffron writes:

"...it is a measure of how solidly the automobile has ruled Philadelphia's urban environment for the last half-century that such an equal-opportunity design has come to constitute an innovation. The bridge's accommodations for pedestrians and bikes are relatively modest, yet their inclusion is a heartening sign that Philadelphia's hidebound culture is embracing its gentler, more progressive side."

The new bridge replaces a failing drawbridge built in the 1920s. After 23 months of construction, it opens to traffic today.
