Brickell Avenue in Miami is in one of the most densely populated areas in Florida. FDOT is slated to begin a major resurfacing project here, but refuses to consider additional crosswalks or bike infrastructure, ignoring pressure from locals.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will begin a major resurfacing project on Brickell Avenue in early 2011. Andres Viglucci reports that jaywalking and dodging cars is commonplace on this busy street.
The residents, the business community and even city planners are demanding complete streets, but FDOT has "rebuffed pleas", according to Viglucci:
"The resulting clash is shaping up as the highest-profile example of an increasingly common standoff in Miami and other cities across the country: local officials and residents who want livable, pedestrian-friendly urban neighborhoods going up against state traffic engineers whose mandate is to keep large volumes of cars moving as fast as possible."
