Traffic problems have grown so bad in one Buffalo suburb that some people are afraid to walk across Main Street.
High-speed drivers, narrow sidewalks and intimidating intersections along the five-lane wide stretch of Main Street in upscale Williamsville, New York are scaring pedestrians away from village shops and dining spots. A town commissioner is promoting a series of "traffic calming" measures to make Main Street more like the successful pedestrian-oriented business districts in neighboring Buffalo, to lure people out of cars and encourage them to walk.
