The largest bus and transit expo in North America happened this week in Vancouver, and manufacturers showed off the latest in transit technology.
Gerry Bellett of the Vancouver Sun went to the Trans-Expo 2010, and focused on the Winnepeg-based company New Flyer. New Flyer's latest is lighter than standard buses, improving fuel economy:
"This bus weighs 10 per cent less than standard models and that results in a seven-per-cent increase in fuel economy, [New Flyer marketing director Amy Miller] said.
Miller said 5.88 miles per gallon - about 40 litres per 100 kilometres - "is not really great for the family car, but excellent for a bus.""
Bellett also talks with members of the TransLink advisory committee that advocates for handicapped passengers about the accessibility of the buses at the show.
