Smaller Homes Coming to Smaller Towns

The small town of Tofino, British Columbia is looking to the Vancouver model of "micro homes" and laneway housing to increase its stock of affordable housing.

Tofino's planners see smaller homes and laneway housing (known as "granny units" in the U.S.) as a way to retain residents:

"Micro homes might work in our community," Chief Administrative Officer Braden Smith said at the meeting. "We can lay a framework down for micro homes to sprout and allow the community to figure out their own way to make it work."
