The mere possibility that a SF County Transportation Authority study could result in a 'border' charge (congestion toll) to drive into SF from San Mateo County has the latter floating their own competing toll for motorists entering San Mateo County.
The 'southern gateway' option is what has the southern county, San Mateo, so upset. Alternative options would focus only on the downtown district and would apply to motorists entering from any direction.
"Instigating what one Peninsula politician said would be a "border war," some San Mateo County officials said they would try to implement a toll to enter the county from the north during rush hour if San Francisco enacts a similar entrance fee for its city. The threat by Peninsula leaders is an effort to persuade San Francisco leaders to shelve their plan.
The toll proposal has Peninsula commuters irate over the possibility of having to pay up to $1,500 a year to get to work, and local leaders are fighting back.
From SF Chronicle: Toll scenarios ready for scrutiny: "San Francisco supervisors, acting in their role as Transportation Authority commissioners, are scheduled to decide Tuesday (Dec. 14) whether to halt or endorse further evaluation of a proposal to impose a toll for driving in certain areas of the city during peak commute periods. Details of the project can be found at www.sfmobility.org".
