Transit Planners' Wake-up Call

Massive financial investments in public transit and ride-share programs have not resulted in a change of national commuting habits.

The 2000 Census figures show that although there is an increase in the number of Californians who use public transit, there is a decrease in car-pooling. And despite its reputation as a car-culture, California was not dramatically different from the nation as a whole in its habits. Surprisingly, CA ranks 30 in the US in the number of vehicles per household, with WY and ID at the top of the list.
