Beyond the fact that supplying lots of parking encourages driving, a new study quantifies the environmental impact of parking lot construction.
The study, conducted by a team in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley, estimates that there are roughly 800 million parking spots in the U.S.
Eric Jaffe of The Infrastucturist summarizes:"...the construction and maintenance of those spaces do, in fact, take a large cumulative toll on the environment. When parking spots are taken into account, an average car's per-mile carbon emissions go up as much as 10 percent, the authors conclude."
