Bus-Only Lane in Los Angeles Faces Political Trouble

The decade-long plan for a proposed bus-only lane on Wilshire Blvd. faces yet another political battle as politicians relent to public complaints.

The original plan for a dedicated bus-only lane consisted of 9 miles on Wilshire Boulevard,stretching from MacArthur Park to Santa Monica Blvd. But complaint after complaint has brought the proposed project, which has received federal funding, potentially down to only 5.4 miles.

"County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, carrying water for high-rise dwellers in the Condo Canyon neighborhood between Selby and Comstock avenues, led a push in December to cut that mile-long stretch. Then City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, no doubt after getting an earful from constituents in Brentwood, proposed deleting the entire segment west of Beverly Hills..." since that city opted out of the the plan from the get-go. This would leave only the mid-Wilshire area eligible, which could in fact jeopardize the entire project all-together if federal funds are relinquished.
