Slow Down, Autobahn

A new proposal in front of the European Commission would put speed limits on the autobahn to reduce carbon emissions, and ban gasoline and diesel powered vehicles by the year 2050.

The broader goal of the plan is to create a air, rail and marine network that connects European cities and reduces the need for personal vehicles, writes Jason Kambitsis:

"The Commission wants to create "essentially CO2-free movement of goods in major urban centers by 2030" while bringing Europe "close to zero fatalities in road transport" by 2050."

As one would expect, the ban has inspired opponents. Kambitsis quotes Hugh Bladon, a spokesman for the Association of British Drivers, who said that EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas "is off his rocker."
