Fighting Sprawl In New Jersey

Hundreds of New Jersey townships are caught in a spiral of increasing sprawl and declinng home values. This is the first of a two-part series on sprawl in New Jersey.

"...many of the problems New Jersey faces -- high property taxes, traffic congestion, loss of open space, urban poverty -- directly relate to sprawl. And they say the dilemma is statewide and worsening... Builders, feeling like scapegoats for a problem that has persisted for 50 years, dismiss the overuse of the catch-all phrase 'suburban sprawl'. Patrick O'Keefe, director of the state Builders Association, said the real problem is a housing crisis."
