Urbanist Aurash Khawarzad writes that Chinese cities are unfortunately making America's mistake of bringing their freeways directly into and through their urban centers.
Khawarzad was attending the APA Conference last week, and discussed Chinese development with visiting planners from that country. He admits that it is difficult to judge planning in China from this great distance, but:
"...if the pattern of urban freeways in the US is any guide, it is almost impossible to fit a freeway in the context of an urban community without having a significant negative impact on the environmental and socio-economic climates."
Khawarzad lists some of the major urban highway projects going up right now around China, including the Huanan Expressway, the Guangxi Highway Project and the Wuhan-Changsha expressway.
