Edmonton Strives For More Than "Crap"

Edmonton, Alberta has a reputation as "the Canadian fiefdom of sprawl" with a "commitment to architectural crap." Mayor Stephen Mandel is working hard to change that reputation.

Columnist Lisa Rochon writes:

"The Edmonton Design Committee, created in 2005, has played a critical role in advocating for new aesthetic heights in architecture. Without compliance, development permits are no longer issued: All public buildings in Edmonton are now required to be publicly tendered and sustainably designed."

The new direction for Edmonton is revealed in five new park pavilion designs, winners of a design competition created by the city. Several new civic buildings are also in the works.
