Walkability Makes Housing More Expensive

A new study shows that improving streets with widened sidewalks, better lighting and other walkability measures can increase the nearby home value as much as $50,000.

Shops and restaurants also benefit from walkability, says the study conducted by the Transport for London Urban Design team, which states:

"There is a strong qualitative case for investment in urban realm improvements. As part of a mix of policies, urban realm improvements can encourage walking, improve health outcomes, benefit the environment, reduce congestion, enhance social cohesion and assist local economies."
