Community leaders hope to raise awareness and the profile of a beloved city daughter.
Most people think of Greenwich Village or Toronto when they think of Jane Jacobs, but Scranton was her hometown. Ashlyn Gomez, director of community engagement for the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority, wants to introduce people to Jacobs' story. On May 7th, Jacobs' birthday, She'll be leading a "Jane's Walk" around the city, an annual event that celebrates the ideas and legacy of urbanist Jane Jacobs by getting people out exploring their neighborhoods and meeting their neighbors.

"But Ms. Gomez is careful to point out that the walk is not about Ms. Jacobs nor is it a historical walk, nor an architectural tour. Rather, the walk is about connecting people to their neighborhood and community and showing them that "they are from a place that matters," she said. Ms. Jacobs' history and architecture may come up, but the focus of Jane's Walk is on the Scranton of today and the people who are in it now."
