The "lack of affordable space in [Boston] for artists, small businesses -- heck, for anyone who wants to make a life here -- is forcing people out, creating a cultural diaspora as once tight-knit communities are compelled to scatter elsewhere in the state and beyond... Artists, small businesses, and nonprofits once drawn to these enclaves by cheap rents and ample space are getting the boot as landlords try to lure more affluent tenants. Developers, meanwhile, energized by an unquenchable residential real estate market, see dollar signs in boarded-up factory windows, zeros behind heavy industrial doors. Loft space, anyone? "
