How Universities Affect their Local Economies

The UK-based Centre for Cities published a short report about the several ways that universities can affect local economic performance.

The Centre was prompted to conduct this study due to the trend of increasing university tuition/fees in the UK.

According to the Centre for Cities, "by far the biggest economic impact that a university has on its city economy is through its local employment and the spending of its students rather than the interaction that it has with the local business base." The results of the Centre's study raise the question, could fee increases actually hurt local economies if they are sufficient to reduce the number of students at universities.
