An independent group is seeking to "ignite essential discussions about art in Los Angeles" by getting locals to put APPROVE or DISAPPROVE stickers on public art around the city.
The group was inspired by Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles director Jeffery Deitch's decision to remove a mural the museum had commissioned from the artist "Blu". Deitch was criticized by many for censorship.
"Deitch and his actions served as a lightening (sic) rod for debate regarding the role of the museum and art," says Nick Douglas, who started the APPROVE/DISAPPROVE campaign.
From Douglas' manifesto:
"My hope for this project is that it serves to energize and enlarge the dialogue, leading to greater public awareness of our museums, broader public attention, increased attendance, and true public ownership of our city's established culture."
