"In 1997, the Atlanta Housing Authority razed the East Lake Meadows public housing project, an area so violent that it was nicknamed 'Little Vietnam.' In its place grew the Villages of East Lake, an innovative public-private gated apartment complex. It was envisioned as a sprawling place where people of different income levels, colors and ages could live together. It was also hoped it would be the centerpiece of revitalization in East Lake, a neighborhood on the eastern edge of Atlanta. "
