Synergy When Trucking and Rail Come Together

An intermodal rail station planned for Northeastern Pennsylvania is identified by local unions as an excellent business opportunity for short-haul freight.

The Manufacturers and Employers Association (MAEA) and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) are banding together to look into the feasibility of turning the new railway station into a business opportunity for trucking:

"Using rail to ship goods is cheaper, but not always practical. But a mixture of rail and trucking can save a lot of money, [Michael Cera, an engineer for Alfred Benesch and Co., Hazleton,] said.

"Railroads are more cost-effective, more fuel-efficient and more environmentally desirable than an over-reliance on highways for freight transportation," he said."
