It has a dramatic new bridge constructed from steel and glass. Designed by a Spanish architect, it is causing a furor.
Redding, CA., is the home of the McConnell Foundation, with assets of over $350 million, and an elegant headquarters and clout that causes resentment of many. It has built this unique bridge on the banks of the Sacramento River to connect two parts of a town park. Opponents say that it is too moderistic for Redding and doesn't fit this former timber town. Proponents say that it's OK that it doesn't fit--it's OK to be better. The foundation wants a cultural revolution for Redding, because, "There is no architecture here." Previous plans that have been implemented, some say, reflect botched redevelopment.
