The introduction of a "Bus Rapid Transit" system in Los Angeles, CA, has been a success. Detroit, MI, is considering a $2 billion plan to bring a similar system to the Detroit area.
"In Los Angeles...residents are singing the praises of a [bus rapid transit] plan that features new, low-step buses, fewer stops and special speed lanes. It has been so successful in its first year, there are plans to open up to three new lines each year for the next 10 years...Metro Detroit planners are buoyed by the experience in Los Angeles and five other cities across the country... [Bus Rapid Transit is believed to be] less expensive than light rail, it uses existing roadways, and it would make public transit more efficient and more appealing to nonriders."
