As San Francisco prepares to host the America's Cup yacht race in 2013, one of the key building areas for the event is also being fast-tracked as the site of a new cruise terminal.
The terminal is expected to be a major new portal for the city, and as the San Francisco Chronicle's John King writes, it will be a testament to the city-building potential of the America's Cup.
"The Port of San Francisco has been working to develop a new cruise terminal for 20 years: One plan capsized at Piers 30-32 in 2006, followed into the deep by a short-lived scheme at the current proposed site.
Both of these were mixed-use developments that the port justified as a way to subsidize a terminal building that would serve its intended purpose - port of call for behemoth ocean liners - no more than 80 days a year. When the port decided in 2009 to push ahead alone, the odds seemed remote that the stars finally would align."
