Inspired by New Urbanism, several new "traditional neighborhood developments" are being planned or constructed in Washington suburbs.
"With its mix of single-family houses, town houses, condominiums and rental apartments, along with stores, restaurants, recreational facilities and an office park, King Farm is one of the more ambitious traditional neighborhood developments (TNDs) now being built in the Washington suburbs...These new developments, all of which are under construction or about to break ground, represent the second generation of TNDs to be built on large suburban tracts. They loosely follow a type of neighborhood design pioneered by Miami architects Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in the 1980s. The planning method harkens back to older, small towns for inspiration. It aims to replace the typical subdivision of cookie-cutter homes on cul-de-sacs with more closely knit communities where people can live, work and shop."
