U.S. Cities Suffering From Tree Deficit

A study released by a conservation group says that tree cover in the nation's cities has reduced drastically in the last 25 years. The study presents the financial and environmental benefits of urban trees.

"American Forests, a nonprofit conservation group, released a study yesterday of 25 years of urban landscapes. Using satellite technology, it concluded that tree cover has dwindled significantly in 20 metropolitan areas, replaced by "gray infrastructure" -- roads, parking lots, buildings and sidewalks... American Forests points out that tree cover provides financial benefits to communities through storm-water management, air-quality improvement and energy conservation. It estimates, for instance, that a well-shaded building saves between 20 and 50 percent in cooling costs during summer."
