Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) announces the winners of the Connected Vehicle Challenge that asked people to submit ideas, using the Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) technology to its full potential.
There are 76 entries total. Five out of six winners are submissions made by the academia from the Univ. of Buffalo, UC Riverside, UC Berkeley, Univ. of Illinois, and Clemson Univ. The ideas range from enhancing vehicle safety to increasing the accuracy of GPS. Doug Lundquist of the Univ. of Illinois even proposes an emissions trading scheme for cars à la cap-and-trade.

"The most sweeping entry, Clemson's Integrated Intelligent Transportation Platform, envisions a complete travel experience guided by DSRC features, from reserving and planning electric vehicle charging stops for longer trips, to buying and paying for a cup of coffee by speaking to your dashboard while driving. They made this 11 minute video showing off all the features."
RITA is a research division of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation.
