With digital cinematography replacing location shooting and huge soundstages, the entertainment industry is becoming a lucrative, sought-after tenant in downtowns and urban areas.
Patricia Kirk writes that the shrinking footprint of these once-massive studios and production companies allows them a new freedom to relocate in urban centers. Santa Monica, California is one example of the shift:
"A significant number of entertainment companies have already recycled existing commercial buildings throughout the city. For instance, actor Tom Hanks and producer Gary Goetzman, partners at Playtone Productions, repositioned the old Santa Monica Seafood Company building on Fifth Street as a home for their company."
Kirk notes that creative companies are a force for historic preservation when they move in, preferring to revitalize old buildings than build new ones.
