Experts Say Detroit's Transit Disagreements Can Be Resolved

Despite a lack of cooperation on regional transit issues, Detroit area transportation agencies can find a way to fix the region's broken system, according to a panel of officials and experts.

Officials from transit agencies in Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Salt Lake City and Portland convened to discuss how Detroit can solve its problems, and focused specifically on improving cooperation among the region's disparate agencies.

"The officials said disagreements among metro Detroit leaders over how to manage and pay for expanded transit and eventually merge the city and suburban bus systems can be resolved.

John Inglish, CEO of the Utah Transit Authority in Salt Lake City, said there were protests before the region built its first light-rail line, but voters now approve sales taxes for transit by 70% margins."
