Sunny Freeman of The Canadian Press takes to the streets to talk to bicyclists about their choice of conveyance. She says a gas price spike during the summer of 2008 pushed many Canadians onto two wheels.
Freeman says Canadians are getting a reply of the 2008 spike now, which is inspiring a new crop of defectors, according to Susan Shaheen of the Innovative Mobility Program at the University of California, Berkeley:
"We definitely tend to see, anecdotally, changes in uptake for car sharing and shared modes when we see gas prices rising, but I think another factor in addition to that is economic decline," says Shaheen to Freeman.
Car-sharing networks like Zipcar and bike-sharing programs are also seeing an influx of new passengers.
