Michael McNeilly of SkyTag covered building sides across Los Angeles with multi-story advertisements, disregarding laws prohibiting them. The city is suing SkyTag for millions in penalties.
The Los Angeles Times says the lawsuit claims that SkyTag "deprived the city of permitting fees, created traffic hazards and endangered the lives of people who were inside buildings whose windows were covered by the multistory vinyl ads."
McNeilly has clashed with the city over this issue for years. Back in 2009 as regulations specifically targeted to curb illegal supergraphics was being considered, SkyTag placed billboards featuring the Statue of Liberty on buildings all over the city, claiming a 1st amendment argument on keeping them.
David Zahniser writes that "McNeilly said he had not seen the lawsuit but insisted that his company went 'by the book' in its handling of the signs."
