In Washington, D.C., Capital Bikeshare just celebrated its "1st Birthday Bash" according to Coleen Gentles.
The first North American community to offer a government-sponsored bike sharing system celebrated at one of D.C.'s newest parks, Yards Park. Capital Bikeshare has been extremely popular, attracting over 18,000 members in the past year. There are plans to add 60 additional stations throughout the District as well as Arlington, VA.
Beginning next year, the National Park Service (NPS) allowed Capital Bikeshare to have stations along the National Mall. The NPS is also promoting increased and safer bicycle usage around the Mall. In addition, they plan on adding more bike lanes and trails which will help increase connectivity to the parks as well as bring more users to them.
These bike sharing stations are extremely popular amongst tourists in addition to the many residents that are fond of the program, says Gentles.
