A $756 million convention center and hotel is being constructed in Washington D.C. even as the hotel industry faces an uncertain future.
"The new Washington Convention Center is taking shape in Mount Vernon Square, with workers busily putting together its massive exterior walls, seemingly oblivious to the crisis in the hospitality and travel industry it is being built to serve.As Washington's hotel industry is reeling from fewer travelers coming to town with the closing of Reagan National Airport after the terrorist attacks, business leaders, developers and planners are beginning to look at the long-term effects a slowdown in visitors could have for the District's new, $756 million convention center and the hotel with more than 1,000 rooms that is supposed to be built near it."
