Ridership is up, but the nation's rail system is still suffering.

Amtrak ridership is up on the new Acela Express high-speed service between Boston & Washington, D.C. but the financial woes continue to mount. Losses are expected to be about $25 per rider. However, some states are approving billions of dollars for high-speed rail corridors "whether or not Amtrak ultimately is the company that provides service." "while many Americans say a high-speed rail system is an urgent goal, Amtrak, saddled with an onerous history of spotty service and financial woes, is struggling for a piece of the future."
