The money, part of a larger $930 million to be allocated nationwide for transit projects, will aid 16 new projects from facility maintanence to hybrid buses.
Matt Helms reports:
"[Transportation Secretary Ray] LaHood stood by a pledge to help the city build light rail along Woodward as a catalyst for improved transit and economic redevelopment along southeast Michigan's best-known corridor. His comments come at a critical stage for the Woodward project: The feds want city and suburban leaders to figure out -- and quickly -- how to jointly manage and pay for the rail line, and, ultimately, regional bus service."
However, "Detroit is reluctant to cede control of management and federal aid, while suburban leaders worry about the Detroit Department of Transportation's pension and benefits costs and subsidizing a service used far more by Detroiters than suburbanites."
