Interstate 69 is planned to run through Bloomington, Indiana, but residents have raised objections. The Feds now threaten that I-69 must be in the city's transportation plan or the city will lose $12 million in funding.
Lesley Weidenbener writes that even though funding is assured through 2013 for area transportation projects including the bus system, the loss of those funds could really start to hurt by 2014 when the current transportation plan expires:
"Nearly $20 million in total transportation funding for 2014 and 2015 would be in jeopardy. Nearly $6 million in state funds could also be at risk.
The numbers include more than $7.5 million in federal funding for Bloomington's bus system would be lost, with more than $5 million in state funding also in jeopardy."
A planner interviewed by Weidenbener said the cuts would not kill the bus program but would require serious cutbacks.
