Nebraska may play a key role regarding decision for pipeline that will run from Canada to Texas. Many businesses and labor groups support the Keystone XL project; many environmentalists oppose it.
Reporter Fred Knapp states that thousands of demonstrators crowded around the White House, "demanding that President Obama deny permission for a proposed pipeline to carry crude oil from the tar sands of Canada to refineries in Texas."
Plans to build a Keystone XL pipeline has received opposition from Nebraska. Governor Dave Heineman expresses his opposition by asking "Why would you risk an oil spill or leak over the aquifer when TransCanada already has a pipeline route on the eastern side of Nebraska?"
Other reasons for opposition, Knapp explains, is because "The vast Sandhills in the northwest region of the state are home to more cattle than people. Beneath the grass-covered dunes is the Ogallala aquifer, which supplies about 80 percent of Nebraska's water for drinking and irrigation."
