Passenger rail used to connect Columbus, Georgia with Atlanta, but the tracks have been silent since 1970. Today, local leaders and activists are pushing for a restoration of train service to Atlanta from Macon, Athens and Columbus.
While reporter Mike Owen says that Columbus "...is not at the forefront of the passenger rail rebirth", Mayor Teresa Tomlinson is "very serious" about reviving Georgia's once-thriving passenger rail system:
"Tomlinson said this week that she is putting together a Mayor's Commission on Passenger Rail in the next two weeks."
Transit activists say it is likely that Macon-Atlanta will be the first route to be revived.
