In Boston, the once red-hot rental market is experiencing a serious downturn -- creating a renter's market unheard for years.
"Boston's once-scorching rental market has begun to cool, with demand slipping and vacancy rates climbing from less than 1 percent this time last year to roughly 5 percent now. The new signs of the times: A for-rent sign on Charlestown's upscale waterfront with an offer of one month's free rent, South End landlords paying finder's fees for tenants, and renters redeeming coupons for $100-a-month rent reductions." However, housing advocates say that even with the recent changes, most workers still can't afford the average apartment.
