Public Architecture, a San Francisco-based organization, and Habitat for Humanity have tapped a Kansas City Architecture firm to pilot green design concepts for the new houses. This project is just one of five nationwide.
"Tom Lally, executive director of Heartland Habitat for Humanity, said a potential site for the first house is being studied in Kansas City, Kan. Heartland Habitat has built 240 houses in the past 24 years, or about 10 a year.
Habitat houses are sold at no profit to qualifying low-income buyers who pay a no-interest mortgage. Costs are kept down by using volunteer labor and, when possible, donated materials.
A typical three-bedroom Habitat house costs about $125,000 to build, Lally said."
