The Frank Lloyd Wright-design Emil Bach House in Chicago will be brought back to original, historical accuracy. Reportedly going well beyond budget, the century-old house will be rented to overnight guests when completed.
"When a feature was beyond repair, the team turned to the original plans and, when possible, the original suppliers. A century later, the building's architecture firm (Holabird & Roche, now Holabird & Root), roofing company (Ludowici Roof Tile) and interior tile company (Cincinnati's famed Rookwood Pottery) were still in operation.
The team has ordered about 100,000 tiles from Rookwood and asked the company to re-create the crackling in the originals. The glaze on crackled tile features an intricate web of lines, making it appear old and shattered, but sometimes the style is intentional."
