U.S. Green Building Council has developed a rating system for evaluating the sustainabilty and environmental friendliness of buildings.
"Thanks to the U.S. Green Building Council, there is now a logical, comprehensible way to assess life-cycle sustainability in existing or proposed buildings: the LEED Green Building Rating System...Under a contract with the Energy Department, the Washington-based council developed the proprietary LEED rating system to create a nationally standardized approach for evaluating commercial and institutional buildings, regardless of location or size. A building's rating depends on specific site characteristics, design strategies and construction features that together contribute to making the building 'green.'"
