On the second anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Sara Miller Llana assesses the rebuilding effort.
Although much progress has been made in relocating the 1.5 million persons made homeless by the quake, the lack of political leadership and a comprehensive long-term plan for recovery, accompanied by the humanitarian needs of the 520,000 persons still living under tents and tarps at 758 camps across the capital, has caused concerns.
"The current situation leaves many onlookers with the sense that little has been achieved. Alex Dupuy, a sociology professor at Wesleyan University in Connecticut who has written extensively on Haiti, is one of them.
"Other than the humanitarian response, which was quite laudable," he says, "It doesn't seem to me that a whole lot of progress has been made."
