A new report ranks all 50 states and the 51 largest American cities in terms of bicycling and walking levels, safety, funding, and other factors.
Compiled by the Alliance for Biking and Walking, the analysis contained in the 2012 Benchmarking Report makes the case that, "investing in biking and walking projects creates jobs, leads to more people biking and walking, and improves safety and public health," according to Alliance President/CEO Jeffrey Miller.
Among the findings:
- Boston leads the country in commuters who walk to work (13.9%)
- Portland leads the country in commuters who bike to work (5.5%)
- Albuquerque leads the country in percent of federal transportation dollars allocated to biking and walking (14.5%)
- Alaska leads all states in per capita funding for biking and walking ($10.97)
