New York Subways Recover From Sept. 11 Attacks

Subway lines damaged by the attacks on the World Trade Center will reopen ahead of schedule.

"Service on the N and R subway lines, which was suspended after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, is scheduled to begin again on Sunday, several months earlier than expected, transit officials announced yesterday. Transit officials earlier said the two lines, which transported almost a million people daily before the attack on the World Trade Center, would remain closed for up to six months. The shutdown of the lines rippled through the system, causing severe congestion at some subway stations in Lower Manhattan, the rerouting of four other lines and crowding on others."
