"Although he is inspired by great building of the past -- Gothic architecture, late-19th-century railway stations and the bridges of engineering greats like Frei Otto and Robert Maillart -- Calatrava will often explain his design ideas with a physical movement, say the flapping of a wing or the folding and unfolding of two hands in prayer. It is this scientist-humanist approach that has sent Calatrava soaring to superstardom."
